Antenatal care is the care provided by health professionals during pregnancy to support the health of the pregnant person and baby. It includes scheduled appointments, screening discussions, scans and checks such as blood pressure, urine and blood tests. At the first appointment, the clinician or midwife reviews previous pregnancies, medical and mental-health history, medicines and circumstances that may affect care. Later appointments monitor wellbeing, the baby’s growth and movement, and preparation for birth. Contact maternity services promptly if you are worried about your health or your baby; you do not need to wait until the next scheduled appointment. Private obstetric consultations can complement, but should not replace, the coordinated NHS maternity pathway unless a complete alternative care plan is formally arranged.
