Laparoscopy is a form of keyhole surgery used to diagnose or treat conditions inside the abdomen or pelvis. Under general anaesthetic, a surgeon makes a small cut—usually near the navel—and inserts a thin camera called a laparoscope. Additional small cuts may be used for surgical instruments when treatment is planned. In gynaecology, laparoscopy may be considered for conditions such as endometriosis, ovarian cysts, ectopic pregnancy, fibroids or hysterectomy, depending on the individual case. Recovery varies according to whether the procedure is diagnostic or includes treatment. Before surgery, the clinical team should explain why it is being proposed, alternatives, expected recovery, material risks and what symptoms require urgent help afterwards. Suitability depends on the suspected condition, previous surgery, general health and the purpose of the procedure; a consultation is needed before deciding whether laparoscopy is appropriate.
